Rock's... Gone Country

Rock's Gone Country is a tribute to Rock 'n' Roll and it's country roots. Rock 'n' Roll came from blending country music with blues and some jazz. Bill Haley was a pioneer in mixing these musical modes way back in the very early 50s, and this mixture is still with us today.

This album is my personal expression of the rock and country music that I love! Every song in this album tells a story. This, I feel, is the essence of country music. The lyrics may be fun, sad or just plain silly, but it's the lyrics that help make country songs memorable. I hope you enjoy listening to these tunes as much as I did writing and recording them.

Yes, today's country music now has a big helping of Rock 'n' Roll blended into it... and yes... Rock's Gone Country, but I know that it really never left

Just Playin... The Blues

I suppose that I was entering my teenage years at a very unique time in the history of popular music. I was born and raised in Chester PA, and at that time there was no rock & roll, r&b, or country music as we now know it. Black music was called "race music" by us white folks, and country music was labeled "hillbilly", and the music on the airways was called "pop". I lived in a city that was a true melting pot of musical sounds. A couple of blocks north of my home was the black neighborhood where I could stand outside a local bar and hear black musicians wail blues throughout the evening. I would sit on the curb and listen to these wonderful sounds for hours. I fell in love with this emotional music, and when rock & roll became popular in 1954, I heard those "blues sounds" incorporated within it. So now I have written some original blues tunes that take me back to my magical past. Yes, and now I'm ....Just Playin' the Blues.

"Just Playin... The Blues" is a compilation of blues songs I have written over the years now on one album. Some old and new. I hope that you dig these tunes!

  Ready 2 Rock

Ready 2 Rock is a compilation of the many styles of music that influenced me. There are blues, country and pop tunes, all of them redesigned in a new and fresh way.

I really enjoyed composing and recording them. I wanted to kind a look back to the good old days when every song was cool; but, at the same time give them a new and fresh treatment!

I would like to give a special thank you to J. Willy for his fine blues harp on "J. Willy is Here", and  Joe Mauro for the great vocal on "Have you seen my Gina".

So please dust off that old stereo & sit back and turn up the volume. Let's go back to a "new-old" time of rock & roll. Hey... Get ready 2 Rock!

Songs From The Cradle of Rock 'N' Roll

As a Comet, I was very privileged to have been a part of the group that really made ROCK ‘N’ ROLL a part of everyday life. But first, let's go back to my initial experience with this sound.

In the early 1950s I heard a new sound coming from my little table top radio. It wasn't jazz, it wasn't blues, and it wasn't country, but an entirely new kind of music that was fresh and alive. Hearing this gave me the desire to play the guitar. Two years later I was performing around the greater Philadelphia area with my group, "Johnny Kay's Rockets". By then, this "new music" had a name, ROCK ‘N’ ROLL.

As rewarding as that was, the real thrill came when I was ask to play lead guitar in the very band that made ROCK 'N’ ROLL popular world-wide, BILL HALEY AND THE COMETS! His recording of "Rock Around The Clock” set in motion the ROCK ‘N’ ROLL phenomenon that is still with us today. For over a decade I traveled the planet having a ball playing the songs that started the "Big Beat". It's an experience that I will never forget. And about the song that I heard on that little radio so many years before - it was an early recording by Bill Haley and the Comets “Crazy Man Crazy”.  It must have been fate!

The Rite Mix = Rock 'n' Roll's ingredients...

This is the "STUFF" that made up ROCK 'N' ROLL... the confection of sounds - that when mixed together gives one the feeling of those good old rockin times, when ROCK 'N' ROLL was new and just plain fun!

I wrote all of these songs and each has it own special story to tell - from the times I was with Bill Haley and the Comet's in the 1960's & early 1970's to JK Rockets today.

I hope that these songs will be as much fun to hear as they were to record. The RITE MIX Has a wide mixture of styles, so please ROCK...ROLL...DANCE...AND ENJOY!

We are JK ROCKETS - “Dedicated to keeping the original sound of ROCK ‘N’ ROLL fresh and alive". Yeah, I guess that it's really "NEVER 2 LATE 2 ROCK".
